Here in Laramie, Wyoming there is a place called the Laramie Youth Crisis Center (LYCC). This place is a safe haven for kids 0-17 years of age that may be experiencing a crisis. At LYCC, they follow their mission “to protect and preserve families by providing a variety of services which strengthen and help the youth and their families build the skills they need.” The employees of LYCC are there around the clock to help kids in the community through any crisis.
There are numerous services that LYCC provides to the community, free of charge. We provide emergency care and shelter, which is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Because each situation is different, length of stay varies with each youth that comes into the center. LYCC provides an opportunity for a time out for children and families to “cool down.” The time outs can last anywhere between a couple of hours to a few days. Additional reasons for placement include alternative to jail; when a youth is involved in the court systems, having committed a less than serious offense. A youth may also be awaiting placement into a foster care home or a residential treatment setting such as Cathedral Home. In both cases, the Laramie Youth Crisis Center is there for them and provides a safe place for a child to stay and to have a support system to help get them back on the right path.
The Albany County Expelled and Suspended (A.C.E.S.) Program, from last month’s blog, is also offered through LYCC. The A.C.E.S. Program is an option for a child to attend when they have been suspended or expelled from school in Albany County. This program provides the students with instruction from a certified teacher and an environment for them to stay caught up on schoolwork and on track with their credits while suspended from school.
Lastly, is the Summer A.C.E.S. Program, which is a program that is provided to youth ages 10-16 that are looking for a positive way to spend their summer. This program really works on encouraging youth to develop positive social skills through physical activity, volunteering, and crafts.
LYCC provides a lot of different services to many different age ranges. The important thing to keep in mind is that LYCC is a safe haven to all kids. LYCC helps youth and families during a crisis learn that there is a support system available for them, no matter what they may be going through.
At LYCC, the employees really focus on making sure that the crisis is not defined. Crisis presents itself differently from one person to the next and it all depends on the situation and the person that is experiencing it. Some examples of crisis that occur, causing a child to seek shelter at LYCC consists of the following:
LYCC is an excellent program that works to give back to the community and provide help to those who are in need. In order for LYCC to provide much needed services to the community, we need support from the community in return. As a non-profit organization, monetary donations are much appreciated as a means to purchase supplies, clothing, toiletries and daily living necessities for the youth residing at LYCC. We also accept gift-in-kind donations. With donations, volunteers and interns are welcome as well. Lastly, word of mouth about this great organization is the most important, as word of mouth is the starting point for many organizations.
The Crisis Center is a safe place for children to receive shelter care and support from the highly trained and caring staff available to help them work through the crisis. They are always there to listen to the children and work closely with the family as a whole to identify areas where change needs to occur; helping them to build the skills they need to provide a safe and productive home environment.
