Deaf Program
In 1995, Cathedral Home for Children implemented a residential treatment program for traumatized deaf and hard-of-hearing youth. We have two cottages on our campus, Hunter, for girls, and Newell, for boys that provide services for the deaf and hard of hearing children. Hearing children are also integrated into these cottages. Some of the services provided are:
• Silent dinners and other activities to integrate hearing and deaf culture
• Floors for vibration sensing
• Interpreters
• Sign classes for deaf and hearing youth
• Video phones
• Alarm lights
• Sign Classes available to all staff
• The Deaf Education program
• Assistance with transition to Independent Living
• Signing Youth Workers on Cottage
The Deaf Program is integrated with the education, counseling, enrichment, and summer programs to provide the deaf and hard of hearing residents with a multi-cultural and multi-educational environment.
