Enrichment Programs
The Work Program is a required program at Cathedral Home. Children have regular chores they must accomplish each day, which creates a sense of ownership in Cathedral Home properties and goals. Beyond these chores, children may work around the cottage, shoveling snow, gardening or other activities. As they progress in their treatment goals, they are moved into positions of greater responsibility, which may include work at the Administration building. The levels of highest responsibility can include age appropriate in-town work. Children apply for jobs just as “regular” people do and are employed as “real” employees. Staff transports the children to and from their jobs.
The money earned is divided into several different accounts. Students may carry a small amount of cash. The majority goes into a savings account. Money from this account may be used to pay debts which the student has incurred before coming to Cathedral Home or which they incur for deliberate damage to CHC property. Students can accrue a very nice savings balance to help them after they leave the Home. A small amount goes into the cottage fund and is used for cottage-wide recreation programs not paid for by CHC.
The Work Program is an excellent way to build both work skills and self-esteem.
